I was sorting out my bathroom earlier and rediscovered Spencer Johnsons Peaks and Valleys: Making Good And Bad Times Work For You–At Work And In Life
. I like reading in the bath, I think there are more books hidden in my bathroom cupboards and cabinets than toiletries!
I digress though, I was making room for the inevitable deluge of Christmas Toiletries (I love my soaks!) and I refound the Peaks and Valleys book that was released earlier this year. When I bought it I was just coming back “up” from another depression and the simple story had an immediate impact.
Perhaps this was because of the way the “story within a story” was told – very simply and comparitively short for a book. I actually read it in one sitting (in the bath!).
Peaks and Valleys is a story of a young man who lives unhappily in a valley until he meets an old man who lives on a peak, and it changes his life forever. Initially, the young man does not realize he is talking with one of the most peaceful and successful people in the world. However, through a series of conversations and experiences that occur up on peaks and down in valleys, the young man comes to make some startling discoveries.
See, it is very simple almost childlike story telling. Each “lesson” is printed on a page of it’s own throughout the book. The lessons are very intuitive, but when you are struggling in your valley they are often lessons that we so easily miss.
My favourite – “The path out of a valley appears when you choose to see things differently.” Although, as yet I am struggling to see any good in my water pipe bursting over the weekend!
The simplicity of the book and the parable like story telling may not be everyones cup of tea, it is both a pro and a con of this book. Perhaps if I had not have been so down I would not have looked at it twice, but I am glad I did.
If you’re looking for a quick feel good motivational book to get you back on the right track, Spencer Johnsons Peaks and Valleys: Making Good And Bad Times Work For You–At Work And In Life
is a good place to start.
